ARTIST STATEMENT
_____________________

My name is Doug Bowles, and I have lived in Leawood Kansas since 1995. I have been a freelance illustrator in KC for over 30 years. My artist representatives were Richard Salzman representing me nationally, and Helen Ravenhill in Kansas City.

My new gallery series is called “Bark from the Park” and is created with bark found in Kansas parks, and printed paper. No real butterflies were used in my artwork. On the contrary, this collection hopefully brings more attention to the fact that the Earth’s magnificent butterflies face a wide range of threats including habitat loss, climate change, disease, pesticides and invasive plants.

Carefully printed butterflies are cut and painted to look like actual beautiful butterflies and glued to natural bark I find throughout Kansas city. Although very sculptural in nature, my artwork is designed to hang and adorn walls. Also in the series are my “Sitting Logs” sculptures, adorned with butterflies. “Bark from the Park” artwork created in a variety of sizes, large and small. Sizes range from 6 1⁄2 feet tall to 9 inches tall.

My new gallery series “Bark from the Park” currently has 20 original pieces.
My most recent gallery affiliation was with Artichokes Gallery in Leawood, Kansas.

Artfully yours,
Douglas A. Bowles
